As a country, we have been facing big challenges throughout 2020. One thing that we’ve seen is that even in the midst of a global health crisis, gun violence in our communities is still an issue.

Join Councilman James Tate, Ray Winans of D.L.I.V.E., Dr. Chandra Car of Miller-Carr Human Services, Mia Reid of The Charles W. Reid Community Help Center and Jeff Nzoma of Nzoma Educational Consulting Group, LLC. NEXT Wed. (8/5) at 5 pm at the D1 C.A.N. townhall, these community leaders will discuss the psychological effects of gun violence and how addressing this issue can lead to safer communities.

Interested in joining the conversation? Meet everyone right back here on the District One Detroit - D1 Facebook page for the live discussion or join on Zoom by using the link or phone numbers below:

The due date for submission is Thursday August 6th.

Timeline PhotosMayor Mike Duggan has declared August 31 as Detroit Memorial Day to honor city residents who lost their lives to COVID-19. The City also will honor those who continue to fight in hospitals, medical centers, food banks, homeless shelters and neighborhood groups across the city.

Because the global pandemic has limited our ability to gather for funerals, the City is holding the Citywide Memorial at the end of August to Honor COVID-19 Victims and Commemorate Detroit’s Resiliency.

The City plans to install large photo boards representing Detroit residents we lost along a route on Belle Isle. Families and friends will be able to say goodbye, and the photos will be given to families when the memorial is over.

For all of this to happen, the Detroit Memorial 2020 Committee, led by Director of Arts and Culture Rochelle Riley, needs families to send photographs of their loved ones BY JULY 31 in one of the following three ways:

Email: [email protected]
US Postal Service: Detroit Memorial 2020, P.O. Box 21761, Detroit, MI 48221, Cc: Rochelle Riley

Our VIRTUAL July D1 monthly meeting will take place THIS Saturday (7/25) right here on Facebook at 10 am. We can't meet in-person but there's still info that you need to know about!

Michigan's own Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist will join the conversation to discuss how the newly formed Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities is working to identify why the African American community has been hit so hard when it comes to the current pandemic.

Terrence Martin of the Detroit Federation of Teachers will also join to discuss the organization's position on students returning to the classroom in the fall.

Lastly, we'll hear from representatives at the City of Detroit Planning & Development Department who will provide updates on the Grand River Streetscape, Rogell Golf Course, O'hair Park and other D1 projects.
